MOMBASA, Kenya, 24 November 2008 â€" Susan (not her real name) has been working as a prostitute since she was fourteen years old. She was forced into the business after her fathers death. Life was very hard. We would sell fish and if any was left over we would use it for a meal. We were many in the family and so I decided to try something. But its not because I like what Im doing, she said. Susan is just one of thousands of young women in coastal Kenya who make their living as prostitutes. A recent UNICEF study estimates that at least 30 per cent of girls in the region are engaged in casual sex work, and they start as young as twelve.
